These abstract paintings have their origins in nature; specifically shapes found in roots or driftwood from the Adirondacks. The paintings are a result of a continual drawing process that starts with thin paint and charcoal, continues with thicker paint and returns to thin paint and charcoal again. The initial shape is improvised upon in order to explore color relationships, scale of shapes and variation of line and mass. The 'voice' of the materials is extremely important in this work ? the contrast of thin or scraped away paint to paint that is thick and unyielding. Drips result from the use of medium and become visual lines. In addition to the physicality of the paint, what is dominant in this work is movement, gesture and turbulence. The rhythms in this work are meant to be a 'stand in' for the invisible forces, sensations and tensions that govern our consciousness.
