In considering this body of photographs
In considering this body of photographs, it has become apparent to me that a primary characteristic is their evocation of mystery. The abstract shapes in these C-prints are enigmatic in two senses: they bear little if any resemblance to identifiable objects, and the technique by which they were produced is impossible to discern. Yet the very obscurity of this imagery facilitates its expansive allusiveness. In fact, these fluid images were generated by a kinetic application of the structure of the sacred image known as the mandala. Applying the central focus of these often circular compositions, I project central light sources onto each of one or more rotating, round, concave mirrors. Together they cast multiple, irregular reflections upon the opposite wall. These I study and selectively photograph. Thus essential to my creative process is the act of focusing on mutating, revolving illuminations, inducing a meditative state. My pictures are engendered by this fusion of intuitive receptivity and a deliberate attention to aesthetic qualities. Nevertheless, the effect is that the images reflect the actual ephemerality of each radiant form. In both their process-oriented technique and their appearance, these works allude to a fundamental aspect of existence, transience.
