Salerno Statement
In contemporary art making there is a content paradigm which rejects meaning derived through decoration. This work challenges that masculine ideal as it embraces the female contribution to visual culture. Pattern , color, weaving and sewing, women's stuff, are put to work. Images from the home; wallpaper, flowers, carpets, dresses and children are used without shame. Lowly craft and fabric store materials are reconsidered. Highly textured two-dimensional works on paper, and idiosyncratic dollhouse-like constructions give decoration its due.
