Paintings titled "New Commandments"
This series of Paintings titled "New Commandments" wrestles with the pre millennium anxiety over the making of new goals, bigger plans, desires to reinvent oneself for the next century. Questions like "Have I lived yet?" and "Why don't I feel more alive?" push to the front of our minds. With the phrase 'Just Do It!' as the acting mantra of the time we ask ourselves 'What is IT?' and "What do I have to DO?" What is this cultural shift from the consumer friendly materialism of the 80's to this 'Are You Experienced?' adventure-thirsty, risk-taking audience of now? Watching the emergence of extreme sports, adventure books, movies, articles with titles like "Death on the Mountain" and "Blood in the Water", ad campaigns screaming to us "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" and "GET UP AND DO SOMETHING!" leaves us wondering what else could we be doing? Is it not enough to experience second hand those tales of tested limits, bloody survival against all odds, or should we want to be a part of this bigger picture? Is this just a trend, or are those of us not participating going to be seen as the couch potato, spiritless, hangers-on of the next millennium? Are You Experienced?
