I’ve chosen
to work with egg tempera because this medium corresponds well with my subject
matter. Painting the figures against a monochrome background, I build up porous
structures.While
working with the paintings I make pairs or series, like one dark blue painting against one
yellowish green painting. To me it’s interesting to watch how the colors come to
life in different ways at dark versus light backgrounds. My subject
matter is human’s relationships with animals.
ECHONAVIGATION SERIES:
Humpty Dumpty from Alice
in Wonderland invites the viewer into a universe where children get
transformed when they meet nature, represented by bats and insects. Bats hunt
insects using echonavigation. The insects have developed ways of escaping. The
painting Echobattle shows a battle
between bats and insects. Bats belong to a group called Chiroptera, which means Handwings.
MIRROR SERIES:
Sign
language and computer keyboards are used in primate language research because
non-human primates lack speech organs. Many researchers into animal language
have presented the results of the studies as evidence of linguistic abilities
in animals.
Other scientists are
sceptical about this. Among the reasons
for scepticism are questions as to whether there is a clear beginning and end
to the signed gestures, and whether the apes actually understand language or
are simply doing a clever trick for a reward. The signs
I’ve placed in my paintings are examples of signs the apes learn to recognize
at a computer keyboard.
CONSTELLATION SERIES:
One group
of motifs shows rats in scientific experiments. Like the radiant rats from the OsakaUniversity
in Japan.From a
laboratory also comes the motif with an iguana whose brain is studied while
it’s sleeping.
