The impulse to create, to give form to ideas, to form ideas, to scratch the surface, to express cons
The impulse to create, to give form to ideas, to form ideas, to scratch the surface, to express consciousness, thought, and sensation begins with the spark of energy that is life. The inception of the process is so filled with optimism and possibility that its ultimate futility lends a constant irony to the self reflective process. The desire to re-create in a manner and image of one’s own has initiated a trail of literature, art, and science which leads from creation myths to the laboratory of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein through Beckett to Dolly the sheep to the ubiquitousness of 21st century cosmetic surgery. This is but a part of the Promethean lineage which informs succors, nourishes, and tickles these works with questions, suppositions, interpretations, and turns, wrong and right. That color, line, and design, touch, tastes, and sight can all serve the mind via the hand is still a marvel. Spark, response, and improvisation all play a part adding in with experience and trust to allow for the flow of images, ideas, forms, textures, and color. The law of contrasts is a fundamental visual means to explore such opposing ideas as being and becoming, form and formlessness, mind and body, man and nature within poetic treatment of themes like genetic mutation, cloning, spare parts replacement, plastic surgery, physiognomy, and phrenology. Executed with humor, intensity, optimism and pessimism I seek a visual language that is continually questioning itself, breaking itself down and reconstructing itself as it seeks surprise, pleasure, and expression.
