Generally I work from simple, schematic black and white drawings I have done on site in city parks, on beaches and on road trips. Working this way allows me to re-imagine local color, form and perspective. I often combine several drawings from different locations into one painting.
Lately I have been interested in things seen in passing, as from the corner of the eye, and then reconstructed in the studio from memory.
I try to use a process that will de-familiarize mundane and every day subjects by allowing them to wander through my mind. My hope is that this process, which is meditative and improvisational, will imbue the work with meaning that will reach beyond formal concerns and engage the viewer's imagination.
