One of the themes that continue in my work comes from an interest in the planning and quality of life of metropolitan areas. It derives from an even stronger concern for the protection of nature and our environment. My work exposes not only the negative side of urban living such as declining urban centers and sprawl but also positive elements such as eco-friendly cities as in my Curitiba, Brazil “View from the Petras” mural. This city is known as a model for reuse, recycling and urban planning. My method of working has been accurately described as combining elements of gestural abstraction, Japanese composition, and commercial illustration techniques into one. I do this with a continuous line that weaves the surface of the work and enables me to describe and convey emotion. The more active the line, the more energy and emotion it expresses. By using this continuous, contour-like line, I deconstruct the space and reassemble it somewhere between abstraction and realism. It also helps create an illusion of movement that is becoming more and more important in my work. As I push it even farther, I have taken the continuous line and combined it with a life-long affinity for bas relief sculpture, creating installations that embody the idea of movement and expansion with a linear bent.
